Stampede BullOnly-250In a showdown of AIF behemoths, the Harrisburg Stampede and Cape Fear Heroes met for the fourth time this season on Saturday night. This time they would battle for the right to be named American Indoor Football League Champions.

For the Heroes, the story all season has been their stifling defense and the play of quarterback Garrett Sutphen. Since taking over for the injured Aries Nelson, Sutphen has been playing fantastic throwing 10 touchdowns and only two interceptions since taking over midway through the season. Not to be outdone, the gunslinger for the Stampede, E.J. Nemeth, has had an incredible season amassing over 1300 passing yards in leading the leagues most prolific offense. The Stampede struck first as Nemeth found wide receiver Jerell Jones in the back of the end zone to take a 6-0 lead and then added a field goal jumping out to an 11-0 lead early in the first quarter. The Fear came back as Sutphen hit Walter Ford for a touchdown narrowing the margin to 11-7. Both quarterback’s drives were efficient in the first half exchanging scoring drives.

With the score 17-13 and under a minute to play in the second quarter, as they have done all season, the Cape Fear defense came up with a big play. Deep in Stampede territory, quarterback E.J. Nemeth threw an ill advised passed that was tipped and caught by linebacker Marcus Hicks who returned it eight yards for a touchdown. The interception return for a touchdown gave the Fear their first lead of the game, 20-17, sending the ruckus crowd into a frenzy. Harrisburg however, added a field goal as the two teams went into halftime deadlocked at 20.

The third quarter was all Harrisburg; they promptly took the third quarter kickoff and drove down the field for a touchdown. Then they added a field goal to take a ten point lead heading into the fourth quarter.

In the fourth quarter, it was more of the same for the Stampede; quarterback E.J Nemeth threw a 16-yard strike hitting Collis Martin in the back of the end zone for a touchdown pushing the Harrisburg lead to 36-20, and they never looked back. For the second straight year, Nemeth was named Offensive MVP and in the second half he sure did play like it. He was simply on fire throwing darts to his receivers and making plays scrambling out of the pocket.. He more than made up for his interception before halftime, rushing for two touchdowns in the second half. The Stampede defense played great suffocating Sutphen the entire night while frustrating the CapeFear offense.

Trailing 36-20, the Heroes received the kickoff early in the fourth quarter when return man Walter Ford was being wrestled down attempting to lateral the ball which was fumbled and consequently recovered by the Stampede. Harrisburg then had the ball on a fourth and goal from the one yard line when Nemeth called his own number and ran around the left side unimpededfor a touchdown giving Harrisburg a 43-20 lead, silencing the once deafening crowd and sealing the AIF Championship for the Stampede. The final score was 57-42 as the Harrisburg faithful celebrated with their team after the game.

“We fought and clawed all year,” remarked an emotional and overjoyed Nemeth after the game. “The coaches did a great job, and it wasn’t perfect but we dam sure stepped up when we needed to. In the first half I missed two long touchdown throws, but in the second half when we needed to, the team and I stepped up. My offense line gave me great pass protection all night. They played great.”

“It hasn’t sunk in just yet,” added Stampede head coach Bernie Nowotarski when asked to describe his emotions after the game. “The guys have worked really hard. This has been a process. Last year we got knocked out by the Fear, and I just really wanted this for our guys, and I’m also happy for our owner Marques Colston. Our defense has played like a beast all season.” The Stampede outscored them 37-22 in the second half enroot to becoming 2013 American Indoor Football League Champions.

“I thought we had a good first half; we went into halftime made our adjustments on both sides of the ball and E.J came out and executed exactly what we talked about,” added Nowotarski .”The kid just plays like a monster; he does everything for us. I told the guys all week to enjoy the moment because you never know when or if you’re going to be back here.”

E.J. Nemeth was undoubtedly the difference in the game. The veteran signal caller was lights out in the second half making plays through the air and on the ground. His toughness and leadership will never show up in the stat column; however those characteristics are just a few reasons why for the second straight year he’s been named offensive MVP. Now he can also be called a Champion.
